Ace Of Shades by Amanda Foody

Another long, long overdue book review I owe you guys.

Title: Ace of Shades

Author: Amanda Foody

Published: April 10th, 2018

[Synopsis:     Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets…and secrets hide in every shadow.
Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.
Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn’t have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne’s offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.
Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi’s enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…
And she’ll need to play.]

So originally when I first saw the cover for Ace of Shades earlier in 2018 (before I read the synopsis or it had even come out) my first thought had been ''Alice in Wonderland re-telling''! That could not be further from the truth, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for a good re-telling.

I finished Ace of Shades back in 2018, but I really needed to get this review out! (Whoops, it's a little late!)

I didn't get attached to Enne until about halfway through the book, which was a little disappointing- but it was made up for in the end. I really enjoyed reading from both her and Levi's point of view, though I do have to say that they were both idiots several times (at very frustrating times might I add).
It was slightly more enjoyable to read Levi's chapters than Enne's but that was mostly because he was my favorite of the two at times.

The world and plot were really good- much better than I was expecting- and everything Amanda Foody revealed in the story was genius. I loved all of that!
(Spoiler) Towards the end, you start to see somethings connect, and my only thought was ''Anastasia!'' It's one of my favorite movies, so of course, I really liked that twist/reveal. (Spoiler Over)

If I personally am in love with a book, or really really like it, I will re-read it several times! I'm a big re-reader. However, Ace of Shades was not one I would re-read. Reading it once is enough, but that's not to say I was disappointed with it!
I will definitely read book 2 when it comes out, but I think it has a lot to hold up to. While there were some aspects I didn't love or particularly like in Ace of Shades, each thing that moved or drived the story on was very interesting and kept me from dying a boring death.

Overall, I would suggest giving Ace of Shades a try. If you don't fall in love with the characters right off the bat, there's still the world and plot aspects that make up for it later on. Even the characters get better later on too.

[My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐]

Have any of you read this book yet? What did you think of it?? I've read one of the author's books before- which was good, but not as good as this one.

Thanks for reading!

  3. I'm glad you enjoyed Ace of Shades. :)

I think I understand what you mean by not getting attached to Enne's character. Unfortunately, I just couldn't make it half way through the book to get to that point. However, I am glad that you were able to.

    I really liked this story's premise. :)

    1. I almost gave up in the first couple chapters, but I'm glad I kept reading. It's not by any means a book I would re-read, but the premise and ending were good!
