Title: The Last Magician
Author: Lisa Maxwell
LINKS: Amazon (affiliate link)
Genre: Time Travel, Fantasy, YA
Publication: July 18th, 2017
Synopsis: Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.
In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.
Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.
But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.
This review will be written slightly different from normal- there will be spoilers [they'll be marked] and because there are so many points or topics to discuss overall to do with this book...I'll just make lists xD
Before reading/just started reading:
- That cover looks slightly concerning, but cool.
- What's this supposed to be about? Let's just jump in!
- I love the main character's name- Esta! So pretty and unique!!
- Ooh, it's been a while since I read a Time Travel book!!
- I like how this book talks about Esta's experience with magic in the future, but it's showing us a dystopian old-timey world with outlawed magic.
- Reminds me a little of Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody
Halfway through
- wHAT kind of Time Travel book is this?!
- Prompts to the romance that is truly a blessing and happens in its own time (and is honestly rather comical at times)
- Esta and Harte make my day, but really need to communicate their feelings better... We all know Esta would not have left Harte behind, regardless of what she says to his face.
- Okay, so I have a hunch for who might be evil... (I'm right later on btw, so no spoilers)
- Esta taking over Harte's apartment is the best scene ever!!
- I like how we have some side characters also subtely shipping Harte and Esta lol
- Okay, but seriously- why isn't Harte's mother dead somewhere yet??
Towards the end/the last few chapters [MORE SPOILERS!!]
- Does ANYBODY else see what I see?!?! (I yelled at some characters in my head at this point.)
- Don't. You. *******. Dare. *glares* And... Dolph is killed by the person he trusted *sniffs* I never trusted him.
- Esta does exactly what she's not supposed to do in the past, and Harte finds out about some things...
- Harte makes me want to handcuff him and Esta together and throw away the key.
- Harte offers/begs Esta to runaway with him and the book and leave everything (and makes me so happy!) Right before Esta spills the beans...
- There are not enough pages left for what I need to happen...
- Harte throws himself off the bridge to let Esta get away with the book and take it to save the future.
- I have a mental breakdown
The Last two Chapters/Finished reading [SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS!!]
- Holy Mac & Cheese, Plot twists happen and we find out Esta is actually from the past (her parents were Dolph & Leena)
- We find out the bad guy had way more tricks up his sleeve and is actually the old man who raised Esta and sent her to get the book from the past!
- Esta runs back to the past and -gasps, HARTE'S ALIVE!!!
- I scream and hug the book in joy as my family stares at me.
- I re-read the last two chapters twice because the first time I hadn't recovered from the joy of Harte and my ship being revived.
- I stare at my ceiling for awhile and recover.
[SPOILERS OVER] Overall Thoughts Now:
- When can I get book 2??
- Where can I get book 2??
- WHY IS NO ONE ELSE TALKING ABOUT THIS BEAUTIFUL BOOK?!?!
- Update: I just bought The Last Magician and it's now on my shelf (I had read a Library copy)
[My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐]
Have any of you read this book yet or heard of it? What did you think??
