I've loved Jane Eyre for years- the story and Jane's strong character throughout her life will always be memorable to me and one that I love. Though parts of the story can be dark, there's also humor throughout and romance.
This manga did an amazing job at capturing everything, from Jane's mind to Mr. Rochester's adoring love for her, but not only that! This manga brought one of my favorite classics to life- honestly, this was so much better than any of the four movie versions I've watched in the past!
The writing was right on point- never dragging, the characters were just like themselves and everything was expressed so well through the illustrations. Even the romance progressed very nicely! I was rooting for the end and then I wanted to start it all over again- just to experience it again.
If you love Jane Eyre or classics retold- definitely give this one a try!!
My favorite part is probably that it shows the epilogue that was in the original book, every other version I've found skips over that beautiful part and ignores it!
[My Rating: πππππ]
Title: Manga Classics: Sense and Sensibility
Publisher: Udon Entertainment
Genre: Manga, graphic novels, classics, romance, historical fiction
Author(s): Stacy King (story adaption & Goodreads author), Po Tse (art by), Jane Austen (original story)
Goodreads | Amazon | Netgalley
Synopsis: Impulsive Marianne Dashwood and cautious Elinor are as different as two sisters could be, yet both are shattered by their father's Sudden Death. Elinor's attachment to the reserved Edward Ferrars is torn asunder by family opposition and his own dark secret, while Marianne's brilliant romance with the dashing John Willoughby comes to a tumultuous end in a devastating public betrayal. Can the two sisters overcome these trials to find true, lasting happiness?
Jane Austen's beloved first novel, filled with romance, redemption and social critique, is brought to life for a modern audience in this gorgeous manga-style adaptation!
While I love almost everything Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility is actually the first of her works I found and got me started on her writing. Though I do have to admit that the story is much less humorous than her other works, it still is so original that I can't not love it!
I honestly liked this manga quite a bit better than the original though, the book was very hard to get through- whereas the manga shows and describes things perfectly for us! (Another reason I usually watched the movie instead of rereading the book.)
The drawing style made certain parts just the right amount of comical, others as touching and emotional as needed- and of course I just loved how Elinor and Marianne were drawn!
I didn't think I'd find a version of Sense & Sensibility that I would want to reread again, but I found it! The emotional and harsher parts were expressed very well in this manga, without making if feel like too much or that anything was unnecessary.
I have to say there are two or three parts that were much better drawn and written in the manga than any other version I've read/watched. And they actually made me feel a lot better about some other things in the story, I was able to understand some of the side characters as well as Elinor and her sister!
[My Rating: ππππ] [3.5 stars!]
I gushed about these manga to my brother just last night as I typed this up for you guys, and he was just confounded that I'd managed to find a manga of Jane Austen works of all things! It's not a secret in my house that I love Jane Austen works. π
Do any of you guys like to read other versions of classics like this? Have any of you read these?? What did you think, or what are your thoughts based on the cover and synopsis??
Thanks for reading loves & have a wonderfully awesome day!!
