A mermaid romance

Synopsis:  She wanted her life to change... he wanted his to stay the same.

Best friends share everything with each other. Or do they? Seventeen-year-old Ashlyn Frances Lanski is tired of her boring, single life. Spending time with her best friend Tatiana, dreaming about kissing Tatiana's twin brother Fin, and swimming competitively are her only sanctuary. The girls plan to leave their drab lakeside town far behind for college. But when Tatchi fails to return home after a family emergency, and no one knows where the family has gone, Ash chooses to do something drastic to find them.

Ashlyn is about to discover what she'd thought to be true her whole life, wasn't, and the truth, too fantastical to imagine. Secrets lurk beneath the deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, secrets that will change Ashlyn's life forever.

The characters were entertaining, though I had a hard time connecting with Ashlyn, I did like her at first. I liked her and Tatchi, and the small brief mentions about when they were younger and hung out with Fin. (Though there was sadly hardly enough mentions of it.)

But if I am being honest, the only characters I really- truly- liked were Tatchi and  Georgia, Jack, or Ash's parents.
I liked Ash and Fin at first, but as I got to know them I really just got annoyed.

The story and plot were practically the only reasons I finished the book. I wanted to know what would happen at the end, though it was pretty easy to guess who ended up with who.

We dived into the mermaid world with Fin and Tatchi, and saw how things were without them with Ash's pov. The mermaid world was I suppose worth reading the book for- until the last few chapters.

Instant Love does not always bother me, but holy crap this book just about made me want to hurl. (I'm rather surprised I didn't.)

We have both protagonists think about each other every so often, but are for the most part with other people and happy- until whoopie-freaking-do, they kiss.
And suddenly everything goes nauseating mushy.

I had the option to read book 2, but um- no thank you.

So... I didn't like they're whiny characters, I didn't like the hurling romance, and I just about died when at the end they have to go through ''withdrawl'' from each other for two months probably (even though they just got together) and they act like they're going to die from not seeing each other.
Phone calls, text messages, emails... people! Have you never heard of these? Just freaking take her with you if it's gonna be that bad for you!

Another thing that annoyed me, when it mentioned something interesting- they never mentioned it again. Or they just didn't go into detail. At all.

I'd had such high hopes for this book, I was so excited to read it- and.... yeah no.
I usually would be willing to overlook some things, but um, something that makes me want to hurl no.

Sorry for that lovely image.

Now it wasn't so bad that I hated every single thing in the book or story, there were good and interesting things that held my attention- but I can't stand the romance. Sorry :(

  1. Such a shame. The cover of the book looked very interesting and I don't think I've read a book about mermaids yet. Great review as always!
